July 4: The Giants scored once in the top of the first on a Terry Kennedy RBI single, but that was it. They would strand runners in scoring position in four other innings and leave nine runners on base. In the third, the Pirates got a double from Barry Bonds, a walk by Jose Lind, an RBI single by Andy Van Slyke and an RBI groundout from Bobby Bonilla. Pittsburgh would only have two more baserunners the rest of the game.

July 5: Kevin Mitchell’s 25th home run of the season put the Giants ahead 2-0 in the fourth, but the Pirates tied it on a two-run single by Jose Lind in the sixth. Giant pitchers retired the final 11 Pirate batters after that hit, however. In the top of the seventh, Brett Butler provided a two-out RBI single for what turned out to the game-winning run.

July 6: The Pirates built a 3-1 lead after five innings with the help of solo homers by Barry Bonds and Glenn Wilson. But, the Giants tied it in the sixth as Jose Uribe tripled, Rick Reuschel had an RBI single, and Will Clark later provided an RBI double. For the second straight game, Brett Butler had the go-ahead hit as his RBI single in the eighth made it 3-2. Goose Gossage got the two-inning save but had to strand the tying run on third base in the ninth inning.
