The 1989 season has reached the All-Star break with the Giants riding a five-game winning streak after a road sweep of the Cardinals. San Francisco is 65-22 at the break, a .747 winning percentage. That would apparently be the second-best winning percentage in MLB history at the All-Star Break, trailing only the 1998 New York Yankees (61-20, .753).
In real life, three Giants made the NL’s All-Star team in 1989: Rick Reuschel, Will Clark and Kevin Mitchell. All three started the game.
Clark (.313, 14 HR, 55 RBI) would still be a likely starter. Mitchell’s batting average (.253) has tailed off but he’s got 26 home runs and 79 RBI, so I would presume that he still has the votes to start. Brett Butler (.305, 16 SB) perhaps makes the team in this replay, but that’s it from the field.
Why not just bring the entire Giants pitching staff to the game? Scott Garrelts (15-1, 0.81 ERA) would certainly be the starting pitcher for the NL. Although, in real life, Garrelts is in a stretch where he missed a couple of starts. So, Rick Reuschel (13-2, 1.58 ERA) still probably gets the starting nod if Garrelts can’t go. Don Robinson (11-7, 2.49 ERA) and Mike LaCoss (10-2, 2.72 ERA) are the other starters who have the numbers to be there. And then there’s Goose Gossage (2-0, 1.11 ERA, 8 SV), Steve Bedrosian (SF stats only: 0-0, 2.25 ERA, 8 SV) and Craig Lefferts (5-2, 2.77 ERA, 11 SV) out of the bullpen.

July 7: Ernest Riles had an RBI single in the second, Robby Thompson hit a solo shot in the fifth and Kevin Mitchell smacked a two-run homer in the seventh inning to make it 4-0. The Cardinals made it interesting, getting solo homers from Pedro Guerrero and Tom Brunanskiy in the seventh. Terry Pendleton’s RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth put the tying run on third base with one out, but he was thrown out at the plate on a ground ball to short, and the Giants held on.

July 8: All the runs came in the first three innings. Robby Thompson had an RBI double and Terry Kennedy provided an RBI single in the top of the first, but St. Louis tied it on a two-run homer by Pedro Guerrero in the bottom of the first. Thompson doubled again in the second inning, scoring two runs. Pat Sheridan hit a solo homer in the third inning. The Cardinals got runners on base in most of the remaining innings, but couldn’t advance anyone past first base.

July 9: The Giants built a 3-1 lead thanks to a Kirt Manwaring RBI single in the second inning and solo homers by Robby Thompson and Brett Butler in the third and seventh, respectively. But, the Cardinals got four hits in the seventh and scored twice to tie it. The game went to extra innings, and Greg Litton swatted a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the 10th. Craig Lefferts retired all six batters he faced for the win.
