There must have been some sort of post-All-Star break hangover, as the Giants went on just their second three-game losing streak of the campaign. Pittsburgh came into San Francisco and won the first three contests before Scott Garrelts and Terry Kennedy put an end to it in the finale. After 91 games, the Giants are 12 wins ahead of pace.

July 13: Pittsburgh built a 3-0 lead with the help of a two-run homer by Gary Redus in the fourth inning. San Francisco got on the board with a two-run homer by Pat Sheridan in the fifth inning. But that would be the only time in the game that the Giants would advance a runner past first base. San Francisco managed just three hits.

July 14: Coming off his All-Star Game start, Rick Reuschel was roughed up for five runs in the first three innings, and there was no coming back from that for the Giants. Bobby Bonilla hit a two-run homer in the third inning and Mike LaValliere had RBI singles in the second, third and ninth innings. Down 5-0 in the eighth, the Giants loaded the bases with no one out but could only manage a single run on an RBI fielder’s choice by Kevin Mitchell.

July 15: John Smiley and Bill Landrum combined on a three-hit shutout to complete the sweep. I rolled a triple play for the first time ever, and unfortunately it came on Will Clark lining out to the second baseman with runners on first and second base in the first inning. Jose Uribe had two of the three Giant hits. The Pirates got a solo home run by Gary Redus in the fifth and a two-out RBI single by Jose Lind in the eighth.

July 16: Scott Garrelts ended the losing streak with his 16th victory, and Terry Kennedy drove in all three runs. The Pirates got the scoring started with a Glenn Wilson solo homer in the top of the second, but Kennedy hit a two-run shot in the second inning. In the fourth, Kevin Mitchell and Kennedy hit back-to-back doubles to make it 3-1. The Pirates got their second run in the seventh inning, but relievers Jeff Brantley and Steve Bedrosian kept Pittsburgh from getting any more in the final two innings.
