7/17-19/1989 St. Louis at San Francisco

The Giants opened the St. Louis series with two blowouts, just like they did in real life. Instead of being swept, which is what actually happened, the Cardinals turned the tables and earned a blowout win of their own. After 94 games, the Giants are 11 wins ahead of pace.

July 18: Will Clark almost hit for the cycle, as he homered, tripled and singled in his first three plate appearances. A 33 would have given him the cycle, but it came up 34 and he flew out. Clark’s solo shot made it 1-0 in the first and Jose Uribe’s first home run of the season made it 3-0 in the second. Pittsburgh closed to within 3-2 in the top of the seventh after back-to-back homers by Terry Pendleton and Tom Brunansky, but the Giants put the game away with three runs in the eighth after three consecutive RBI singles by Kirt Manwaring, Uribe and pinch-hitter Ken Oberkfell.
