The Giants managed a two-game split at Chicago, doing better than the one win they posted there in reality. Other than a shutout to open the series, the pitching wasn’t up to its usual standard. After 98 games, San Francisco is 12 wins ahead of pace.

July 22: The Giants led 3-0 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and also took a lead in the top of the 10th, but managed to lose this one. Atlee Hammaker had a shutout going but the first three Chicago batters reached base to load the bases. Steve Bedrosian came in and got a double play, but after walking the next batter to load the bases again, Joe Girardi tied the game with a triple. Kevin Mitchell — who homered in the second and fifth innings, led off the 10th with a double and scored on a Candy Maldonado single. But in the bottom of the 10th, the Cubs strung together three hits, including a walk-off RBI double by Andre Dawson.

July 23: Kevin Mitchell homered again, his 29th of the season, and his three-run shot made it 4-2 in the top of the third. Jose Uribe made it 5-2 with an RBI triple in the fourth. Chicago trimmed the deficit to 5-4 with another Andre Dawson home run. That would be it for the Cubs, however, and Will Clark added an insurance run with an RBI double in the eighth.
