The season passed the century mark, with more than 100 games now played. The Giants earned a four-game sweep in Atlanta (bettering the 2-2 real-life record). This time they had the bats to thank, as they scored at least eight runs in three of the four games. That overcame some iffy pitching, as the Braves averaged more than five runs per contest. Atlanta’s Dale Murphy hit four home runs, while the Giants’ Kevin Mitchell had three, giving him 32 for the season. After 102 games, San Francisco is now 14 wins ahead of pace.

July 24: Both bullpens failed to hold leads, and the Giants rallied to win the game in the ninth inning. Kevin Mitchell’s three-run homer got the Giants on the board and take a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning. The lead bounced back and forth the couple of innings, but the Braves went to the ninth with a 6-5 lead. Atlanta closer Joe Boever couldn’t get the job done, as Brett Butler had an RBI single and Mitchell knocked a two-run triple for what turned out to be the game-winner. Atlanta hit four home runs, two of them by Dale Murphy.

July 26: The Giants broke out to a 4-0 lead, as Matt Williams had a solo home run and Pat Sheridan had a two-run double in the second inning, and Robby Thompson had an RBI double in the fourth. Scott Garrelts didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning, but the second one was a two-run triple by Lonnie Smith to cut the lead in half. Garrelts was hit by a line drive and had to come out of the game in the seventh inning, but the Giant relievers finished it out successfully.
