The Giants won the opener at Chavez Ravine to improve to 7-0 against the Dodgers this season. But, LA bounced back to win the next two, just as they did in real life. The run differential in each game was almost spot on. The Giants won by three in game one (exact), the Dodgers won by two in game two (it was actually three), the Dodgers won by three in game three (exact). After 108 games, the Giants remain 14 wins ahead of pace.

August 1 — Scott Garrelts threw his fourth (!) one-hitter of the season and his seventh shutout. He retired the game’s first 15 batters before Jeff Hamilton led off the sixth inning with a double. Garrelts then put down the next 12 hitters in a row. All three Giants runs came in the first inning thanks to a Kevin Mitchell RBI single and a Candy Maldonado two-run double.

August 2 — The Dodgers’ Kal Daniels hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning. The Giants scored their runs early on an Ernest Riles sacrifice fly in the first and a Kevin Mitchell RBI double in the third. And though they would keep moving runners into scoring position, no more came home and a total of 14 runners were left on base. The Dodgers tied it with a two-run homer by Mike Marshall in the fourth inning.

August 3 — Orel Hershiser nearly matched Scott Garrelts’ outing. He had only given up one hit in the first seven innings, but Will Clark’s RBI double in the eighth inning broke up the shutout and gave SF its second hit. However, the Dodgers were already up 2-0 at that point and they tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
