As these were the first “home” games since the real-life passing of former San Francisco manager Roger Craig, we begin this series with a moment of silence and a standing ovation for the skipper of this 1989 team. He won 586 games in eight years (1985-92) with the Giants and brought the term “Humm Baby” into the baseball world.
On the field, the Giants swept the three-game series against the Astros, scoring a total of 21 runs (11 of them in the first inning). After 111 games, the Giants are now 15 wins ahead of pace.

August 4 — Kevin Mitchell got the Giants going with a two-run double in the first inning, and then he and Pat Sheridan both hit two-run homers in the third inning. Oddly, despite scoring six runs, those were the Giants’ only three hits of the game. Don Robinson tossed his second shutout of the season, also giving up three hits.

August 6 — For the third straight contest, the Giants jumped in front in the first inning. This time they scored four runs, with the big blow being a bases-loaded triple by Matt Williams. Will Clark hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Bob Knepper, acquired two days earlier from the Astros, constantly pitched out of trouble against his former team. He stranded eight runners on base in the first three innings.
