8/18-20/1989 San Francisco at Philadelphia

The first two games in Philadelphia were high-scoring affairs, followed by the Giants’ 24th shutout of the season. As they did in real life, the Giants won two of three games in this series. Kevin Mitchell hit his 40th and 41st home runs, and Scott Garrelts won again after missing several starts. After 124 games, the Giants remain 15 wins ahead of pace.

August 18 — The Giants let another one get away, as they led 6-0 after the top of the fifth and 7-5 after the top of the seventh. Robby Thompson had four hits and Candy Maldonado had a three-run double in the third inning to spur the offense. But, the pitching couldn’t hold off the Phillies. Ricky Jordan’s two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth put Philadelphia ahead.

August 19 — The Giants almost blew another one, as they turned a 6-3 lead into a 7-6 deficit after seven innings. But, Ken Oberkfell had a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth, and Will Clark’s third double of the game drove in two more runs as the Giants took the lead back. Brett Butler had led off the game with a home run and Kevin Mitchell hit his 40th home run of the season in the seventh inning.

August 20 — Scott Garrelts returned after not pitching since August 1. He won his 19th game and tossed his 11th shutout, though it wasn’t easy. He gave up seven hits and two walks, plus there were two Giant errors. Philadelphia got runners to third base in three different innings, and loaded the bases in the first inning. Kevin Mitchell and Greg Litton hit solo home runs, and Litton also had an RBI triple.
