The Giants closed out the month of August with two wins in three home games against the Phillies. San Francisco won a couple of pitchers’ duels before turning in their worst pitching performance of the season. After 133 games, the Giants are 14 wins ahead of pace.

August 28 — Will Clark hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to account for the Giants’ runs. Rick Reuschel had a no-hitter through six innings, but it was broken up in the seventh, and the shutout bid ended in the eighth on an RBI double by Lenny Dykstra. But Reuschel got the next out and Steve Bedrosian finished it off for his 17th save.

August 29 — Kevin Mitchell gave the Giants a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third, but the Phillies tied it in the top of the sixth. The Giants regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles by Don Robinson and Brett Butler. Robinson improved to 18-8 with the win, and Craig Lefferts collected his 12th save.

August 30 — The Phillies scored early and often as the first three Giant pitchers were shellacked. Nine of Philadelphia’s 19 hits went for extra bases. Will Clark hit a two-homer in the third, his 22nd, and added an RBI single in the fifth.
