1989 San Francisco Giants August Recap

One month remains in the 1989 campaign! We’ve rolled 133 games to this point. The Giants ended August in the same place they began it, 14 wins ahead of their real-life pace. But, this was the sim Giants’ worst month so far, and the first time they didn’t post a winning record. San Francisco went 14-14, just as they did in real life.

At 89-44, the Giants need to win just three more games to match the 92 they actually had.

The hitting in August was a little worse — the team batting average dropped from .245 to .242 (which is still just .008 off the real-life mark at this point). The pitching was a lot worse, but that helped move us back at least a little bit closer to reality. After posting an ERA of 3.55 in August, the Giants went from 2.43 to 2.67 (still quite a bit better than the real-life 3.24 ERA after August).

The Giants had their two longest losing streaks of the season in August, four and five games. One reason for the downturn: the best two pitchers, Scott Garrelts and Rick Reuschel, both missed multiple starts. Nearly half the Giant starts (13 of 28) were made by “D” pitchers.
