9/6-7/1989 San Francisco at Atlanta

The Giants posted their second straight two-game road sweep, this time going to Atlanta to win a pair of contests. Scott Garrelts picked up his 20th win and Kevin Mitchell increased his season totals to 44 home runs and 133 runs batted in. After 140 games, the Giants are 13 wins ahead of pace.

September 6 — The Giants pounded out 17 hits and easily could have had more than eight runs, but they left 12 runners on base. After being stuck on 19 wins for a couple of starts, Scott Garrelts got the victory and only made one bad pitch, a two-run homer to John Russell in the fifth inning. The Giants were already ahead 5-0 at that point, however. Kevin Mitchell had a two-run triple in the first inning and a two-run homer in the seventh.

September 7 — The Giants only had two hits in the first 11 innings. Both came in the fifth inning, including starting pitcher Rick Reuschel’s two-RBI single. Two of Atlanta’s five hits came in the seventh inning, including a two-RBI triple by John Russell to tie the game. San Francisco relievers retired all 12 batters they faced from the ninth inning on. In the top of the 12th, Will Clark led off with a single and scored on Kevin Mitchell’s double — the team’s third and fourth hits of the contest.
