September 22 — Matt Williams staked the Giants out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and Ernest Riles added an RBI single in the sixth to make it 3-0. A pair of RBI doubles by Craig Reynolds and Alex Trevino got Houston on the board in the eighth and within a run, but Kevin Mitchell hit a solo homer in the eighth for an insurance run. Scott Garrelts earned his 22nd win and stranded runners in scoring position in four different innings.

September 24 — The Giants scored five times in the first two innings to take a 5-1 lead, but it wasn’t enough. Ken Oberkfell and Kevin Mitchell had RBI singles in the first and Ernest Riles had a two-run double in the second inning. The Astros chipped away, as Eric Anthony had a pinch-hit two-run homer in the fourth to make it 5-3. After another run in the sixth, Houston tied it in the eighth and went ahead in the ninth on Ken Caminiti’s RBI single.
