September 29 — The Giants couldn’t find an answer for Andy Benes, who pitched a four-hit shutout for the Padres. San Francisco got a runner to second base in each of the first three innings, and again in the seventh inning, but no further. The Padres took the lead in the sixth on a Tim Flannery RBI single. In a four-run eighth inning, Benes helped himself with a two-run homer.

September 30 — The Giants built a 6-2 lead, but it wasn’t enough. Will Clark and Matt Williams both had a pair of RBI singles, and Kevin Mitchell hit his 50th home run in the sixth inning. But the Padres scored once each in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, and lit up closer Steve Bedrosian for three runs in the bottom of the ninth, including a walk-off RBI single by Garry Templeton.

October 1 — The Giants ended the season on a positive note and overcame a 2-0 deficit. Kevin Mitchell’s 51st home run tied the game at two in the top of the sixth. The Giants loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning, and Terry Kennedy’s sacrifice fly put San Francisco ahead.
