UCLA 6, California 3: Eric Karros hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to put the Bruins on top. The Golden Bears closed to 3-2 on Bob Melvin’s two-run single in the second inning. UCLA went ahead 5-2 when Dave Roberts and Todd Zeile drove in runs in the third inning. Eric Byrnes hit a solo homer for the Bruins in the seventh to make it 6-2.

Bret Boone and Fred Lynn hit back-to-back homers in a four-run third inning as the Trojans went ahead 5-1. Long Beach State scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth on RBI doubles by Jason Giambi and Jeff Liefer to send it to extras.
