MLB College Gameday #1

If the first gameday is any indication, a lot of runs will be scored in this league. The winning team scored eight runs in four of the five games, and the other victor plated six runs. Only one team failed to score as many as three runs. One contest went into extra innings as USC edged Long Beach State.

UCLA 6, California 3: Eric Karros hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to put the Bruins on top. The Golden Bears closed to 3-2 on Bob Melvin’s two-run single in the second inning. UCLA went ahead 5-2 when Dave Roberts and Todd Zeile drove in runs in the third inning. Eric Byrnes hit a solo homer for the Bruins in the seventh to make it 6-2.

USC 8, Long Beach State 6 (10 innings): Morgan Ensberg hit two of the Trojans’ four home runs, including a two-run shot that put USC ahead in the top of the 10th. Bret Boone and Fred Lynn hit back-to-back homers in a four-run third inning as the Trojans went ahead 5-1. Long Beach State scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth on RBI doubles by Jason Giambi and Jeff Liefer to send it to extras.

Stanford 8, Arizona 4: The Cardinal scored five times in the second inning, including a two-run homer by Jeffrey Hammonds. He also had a two-RBI double in the sixth inning after Long Beach State had cut the deficit to 6-4. Stanford’s Jed Lowrie went 4-for-4 with three doubles.

Arizona State 8, Cal State Fullerton 1: Craig Swan had the best pitching performance of the day, striking out 10 while giving up just five hits and one run in seven innings. ASU took a 5-1 lead after two innings, with Reggie Jackson collecting a two-RBI double. Alvin Davis hit a solo homer in the fifth inning.

Pepperdine 8, Oregon State 4: Holding a 5-3 lead after six innings, the Waves put it away in the seventh as Chad Kreuter hit a solo homer, Chase D’Arnaud had an RBI double and Danny Garcia followed with a run-scoring single. Michael Conforto had an RBI double in the second inning and a solo home run in the eighth for the Beavers.
