Long Beach State 6, Stanford 2:The Cardinal went up 2-0 early, including a solo home run by Mike Aldrete, but the Beach scored six unanswered. Terrmel Sledge put LBSU ahead with a solo homer in the sixth inning. A run-scoring single by Troy Tulowitzki in the seventh and a two-run double by Jason Giambi in the ninth provided some insurance.

Pepperdine 2, California 1: The first pitchers’ duel of the season went to the Waves’ Dan Haren. Cal scored the opening run in the third inning on a triple by Darren Lewis and a sacrifice fly by Bob Melvin, but that was it. A pair of Golden Bears contributed to Pepperdine’s only runs, as with the bases loaded Rob Picciolo provided a two-RBI single in the fourth inning. Haren got 16 straight out at one point.

USC 8, Oregon State 7 (11 innings): The Beavers led 5-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh, and took a 7-5 lead after the top of the 10th, but couldn’t hold on. Steve Lyons had three RBI early among his five hits and Jacoby Ellsbury had a two-run homer to help OSU to the lead. The Trojans got a two-run homer from Fred Lynn and RBI doubles by Morgan Ensberg and Eric Munson in the eighth to tie it. Tied again at 7-7 in the 11th, Ensberg singled and went to second on an error, and Jason Lane’s fifth hit of the game was a walk-off double.
