MLB College Gameday #3

Pepperdine (thanks to the first shutout of the season by Mike Scott) and UCLA (due to a five-run ninth-inning rally) stayed unbeaten, while Arizona State and USC were handed their first losses. Arizona and California won for the first time, leaving only two winless teams after the third round of play.

Pepperdine 3, Cal State Fullerton 0: Mike Scott tossed a 13-strikeout, five-hit, two-walk masterpiece. Only one Fullerton runner reached third base, when Mark Kotsay tripled with two outs in the fifth inning. The Waves got an RBI single from Danny Garcia in the second and a two-run homer by Rob Picciolo in the fourth.

UCLA 9, Arizona State 8: The Sun Devils took an 8-5 lead to the bottom of the ninth, but after loading the bases with one out, Brandon Crawford knocked a two-run double, Jackie Robinson hit a sacrifice fly, and Eric Karros hit a walk-off double.

California 7, USC 2: The Trojans tied the game at two in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI double by Morgan Ensberg and an RBI single by Roy Smalley. But the Golden Bears put it away late, as Bob Melvin hit a two-run homer and Marcus Semien added a solo shot in the seventh, and Kevin Maas stroked a two-run double in the eighth.

Arizona 5, Long Beach State 1: The Wildcats’ Ron Hassey had an RBI single in the third and a two-run double in the fifth to make it 3-1. John Moses and Kevin Newman added solo homers in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively. The Beach only got a solo homer from Jason Giambi in the fourth inning.

Stanford 2, Oregon State 1 (13 innings): The Cardinal’s Jeffrey Hammonds led off the game with a home run, but then Stanford wouldn’t score again for 12 innings. Oregon State tied it on a two-out RBI singly by Wes Schulmerich in the fifth inning. The Cardinal went ahead in the 13th when Bob Boone led off with a single and later scored on an error. The Beavers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 13th but couldn’t bring a run home.
