MLB College Gameday #6

After the sixth round of games, we have no more unbeaten and winless teams. UCLA’s prolific offense was finally held down by Barry Zito and rival USC. At long last, Cal State Fullerton picked up an extra-innings win over rival Long Beach State. After one-third of the season, the standings have tightened up a little bit.

Oregon State 9, California 8: The Beavers trailed 4-0 after three innings and 6-4 after 6 1/2 innings. OSU took its first lead at 7-6 in the eighth, but the Golden Bears went back in front 8-7 in the top of the ninth. Michael Conforto led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run. The Beavers then loaded the bases, and with two out, Nick Madrigal knocked a walk-off single.

Cal State Fullerton 4, Long Beach State 3 (11 innings): Terrmel Sledge hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first, but that was it for the Beach. The Titans’ Phil Nevin hit a pair of solo homers, and his second one tied it at three in the seventh inning. In the top of the 11th, Mark Kotsay’s solo shot put Fullerton in front.

Arizona State 6, Stanford 0: Floyd Bannister struck out 10 and threw a six-hit shutout. Barry Bonds had a pair of doubles, one of which was good for two runs in the first inning, and a solo home run in the seventh.

Arizona 8, Pepperdine 2: The Wildcats scored five runs on five hits in the second inning and went up 8-0 on J.T. Snow’s solo homer in the fifth inning. The Waves broke up the shutout in the seventh on back-to-back RBI doubles by Danny Garcia and Ryan Christenson.

USC 7, UCLA 2: Morgan Ensberg hit a solo homer in the second and Fred Lynn had a two-run double in the third to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead. After the Bruins made it 3-1, USC extended its lead as Jacque Jones had an RBI double in the seventh and Jason Lane hit a three-run homer in the eighth.
