MLB College Gameday #7

There was a lot of excitement in the seventh round of play, highlighted by Tom Seaver’s one-hit, 16-strikeout masterpiece, while two other games had walk-off finishes, and another saw the home team go ahead in the bottom of the eighth. Only three of the 10 teams currently have winning records.

USC 9, Pepperdine 0: Tom Seaver struck out 16 and pitched a one-hit shutout while walking three. He had a no-hitter with two outs in the eighth when the Waves’ Ryan Christenson got their only hit. No Pepperdine batter reached second base. USC’s Jacque Jones went 4-for-4 and had a solo homer in the eighth inning.

UCLA 5, Stanford 3: The Cardinal’s Stephen Piscotty hit a two-run homer in the top of the first, but UCLA eventually tied it in the seventh inning on Eric Byrnes’ RBI double. Todd Zeile put the Bruins ahead in the eighth with a solo homer, and later on, Eric Karros had an RBI single and Troy Glaus hit a sacrifice fly.

California 5, Arizona 4 (10 innings): The Wildcats went ahead 4-2 in the top of the ninth on Casey Candaele’s two-run homer, but with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, after an error, the Golden Bears’ Marcus Semien tied it with a two-run shot of his own. In the bottom of the 10th, Jeff Kent led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored the game-ending run on a Mark Canha’s single.

Cal State Fullerton 6, Oregon State 1: Justin Turner and Aaron Rowand drove in runs for the Titans in the top of the first. They made it 6-0 in the fourth, with Christian Colon providing a two-RBI double. Three Titan pitchers limited the Beavers to three hits.

Arizona State 8, Long Beach State 7: A back-and-forth game saw the Beach go ahead 7-6 in the eighth inning on Jason Giambi’s solo homer. In the bottom of the ninth with two out, Rick Monday hit a walk-off two-run home run for the Sun Devils. It was their fourth homer of the game.
