MLB College Gameday #10

The 10th round of games brought several close contests. Three of the games were decided by one run and another was a two-run contest. UCLA posted the only lopsided win of the day, though USC stayed tied atop the standings with a walk-off victory. After getting off to a great start, Arizona State has lost three in a row to fall two games back.

UCLA 10, California 3: The teams were locked in a close game late, but the Bruins’ Jackie Robinson hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning and a three-run shot in the eighth. That was one of three UCLA homers in a six-run eighth inning, with Troy Glaus and Chase Utley hitting solo shots.

Arizona 2, Stanford 0: The Wildcats’ Joe Magrane tossed a three-hit shutout and only once allowed a Cardinal to make it into scoring position. The Wildcats scored their first run in the fourth inning on a double play, and Jack Howell had a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

USC 5, Long Beach State 4: Terrmel Sledge hit a three-run homer for the Beach in the top of the first. The Trojans came back with two in the bottom of the first and two more in the second on a Jacque Jones two-run homer. It stayed 4-3 until the ninth. The Beach tied it in the top half of the frame on a two-out single by Matt Duffy. But in the bottom of the ninth, Roy Smalley led off with a single and eventually scored on a two-out, walk-off single by Bret Boone.

Cal State Fullerton 7, Arizona State 6: The Titans broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the sixth inning as Mark Kotsay had an RBI single and Justin Turner followed with a two-run double, both with two outs. ASU got a two-run homer from Barry Bonds in the ninth but needed three.

Oregon State 4, Pepperdine 3: After the Waves’ Chase D’Arnaud hit a two-run homer in the second, the Beavers came back with a four-run third inning, and that was all they would need. Nick Madrigal had an RBI single, Jacoby Ellsbury knocked a two-RBI triple and Michael Conforto added an RBI double. Pepperdine had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth but could only bring one run home.
