MLB College Gameday #9

At the halfway point of the league season, USC pulled into a first-place tie with UCLA thanks to Oregon State’s late-game heroics. Arizona State would have joined them atop the leaderboard at 7-2 but for an extra-innings loss to California. Three of the five games were decided in the final inning.

California 8, Arizona State 7 (10 innings): The Golden Bears led 6-1 in the third inning, and 7-5 heading to the bottom of the ninth, but the Sun Devils sent it to extra innings on two-out RBI singles by Reggie Jackson (5-for-5) and Bob Horner. Geoff Blum led off the top of the 10th with a solo homer for what turned out to be the game-winner.

Cal State Fullerton 4, Arizona 3: The Wildcats got a solo homer from John Moses in the seventh and an RBI single by Hank Leiber to take a 3-2 lead. But in the bottom of the ninth, the Titans got three consecutive singles by Jeremy Giambi, Khris Davis and Brett Mayne. The last one tied the game, and Christian Colon’s sacrifice fly was the walk-off game-winner.

Oregon State 5, UCLA 4: The Bruins led 4-1 heading to the ninth inning. Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run homer to make it 4-3. After the first out, Adley Rutschman and Steve Lyons singled. Wes Schulmerich tied it with an RBI double, and Darwin Barney’s RBI groundout put the Beavers ahead.
