MLB College Gameday #11

More drama on this day’s games, as two contests went to extra innings, and another saw the tying run left on third base in the ninth inning. Cal beat Oregon State after hitting a home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game before prevailing in extras. UCLA and USC both won to keep their two-game leads over Arizona State.

UCLA 8, Cal State Fullerton 7 (10 innings): The Bruins tied it at seven on Eric Karros’ two-run homer in the seventh inning. In the bottom of the 10th, Eric Byrnes led off with a triple. After two strikeouts, Shane Mack ended it with a walk-off single.

USC 9, Oregon State 6: The Trojans built an 8-0 lead after strong pitching by Tom Seaver and big hitting games by Jacque Jones and Fred Lynn. The Beavers roughed up the Trojans’ relievers, scoring five times in the last two innings, but it wasn’t enough.

California 3, Pepperdine 1 (11 innings): The Waves’ David Newhan hit a solo home run in the third inning for what was the only run of the game for the longest time. Mike Scott had a one-hit shutout going with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Golden Bears’ Conor Jackson homered to extend the contest. Cal won it in the 11th on Marcus Semien’s two-run homer.
