USC and UCLA entered the day tied for the top spot and while the Trojans won a walk-off victory against Cal, the Bruins suffered a walk-off defeat versus Arizona State. Those were two of the three games decided by a single run.

Cal State Fullerton 6, Pepperdine 0: Kirk Saarloos pitched a four-hit shutout for the Titans. The Waves got a baserunner to third base three times but couldn’t bring a run home. CSF hit three home runs, with Justin Turner collecting a two-run shot in the fifth inning and Mark Kotsay and Khris Davis hitting solo blasts in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively.

USC 4, California 3: Cal built a 3-1 lead on Conor Jackson’s two-RBI single in the third inning. The Trojans tied it in the sixth inning after Jacque Jones homered and Morgan Enberg later had an RBI single. In the bottom of the ninth, the Golden Bears got the first two outs, but USC then got three consecutive singles by Jones, Bret Boone and Fred Lynn, the final one scoring Jones to provide the walk-off victory.

After an error, Barry Bonds ended the contest with a run-scoring single.
