MLB College Gameday #12

Twelve games in, and each team has now made it three times through the pitching rotation. For the first time all season, UCLA doesn’t have a share of first place. USC and UCLA entered the day tied for the top spot and while the Trojans won a walk-off victory against Cal, the Bruins suffered a walk-off defeat versus Arizona State. Those were two of the three games decided by a single run.

Cal State Fullerton 6, Pepperdine 0: Kirk Saarloos pitched a four-hit shutout for the Titans. The Waves got a baserunner to third base three times but couldn’t bring a run home. CSF hit three home runs, with Justin Turner collecting a two-run shot in the fifth inning and Mark Kotsay and Khris Davis hitting solo blasts in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively.

USC 4, California 3: Cal built a 3-1 lead on Conor Jackson’s two-RBI single in the third inning. The Trojans tied it in the sixth inning after Jacque Jones homered and Morgan Enberg later had an RBI single. In the bottom of the ninth, the Golden Bears got the first two outs, but USC then got three consecutive singles by Jones, Bret Boone and Fred Lynn, the final one scoring Jones to provide the walk-off victory.

Oregon State 6, Stanford 2: Tied at two after six innings, the Beavers went ahead in the seventh on an RBI single by Nick Madrigal and an RBI groundout by Cole Gillespie. OSU added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the ninth on an RBU double by Jacoby Ellsbury and a run-scoring single by Michael Conforto.

Long Beach State 8, Arizona 7: All the scoring came in the first five innings. Jeff Liefer hit a two-run homer in the third for the Beach, while Jason Giambi had a three-run shot in the fourth. What turned out to be the game-winning run came in the fifth on a RBI double by Jeff McNeil.

Arizona State 5, UCLA 4: The Sun Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, with Bob Horner hitting a three-run homer in the third. ASU’s Mike Leake had a no-hitter going with two outs in the seventh but the Bruins’ first hit was a two-run homer by Chase Utley. UCLA tied it in the eighth with RBI doubles by Brandon Crawford and Eric Karros. In the bottom of the ninth, Dustin Pedroia led off with a double. After an error, Barry Bonds ended the contest with a run-scoring single.
