King of the Ring Matches 33-40

There was only one real upset in the second round of the losers’ bracket, but it was a big one, as third-seeded Ultimate Warrior was ousted from the competition. Elsewhere, Ted DiBiase advanced in a match between two of the top six seeds. Top-seeded Hulk Hogan got back on the winning path.

Losers’ Bracket Second Round Matches:

(18) Big Boss Man vs. (32) Curt Hennig: Big Boss Man had no interest in winning this one cleanly. He constantly found ways to get the referee distracted, and hit Hennig with the night stick four separate times. The fourth time put Hennig down for the count. Big Boss Man def. Hennig by pinfall at 24:00.

(7) Big John Studd vs. (24) Rick Martel: This match was a marathon, lasting over an hour. Studd couldn’t land any big moves, but wore down Martel over time. Martel got Studd into the Boston Crab twice, but Studd escaped. Both wrestlers were exhausted or close to it when Studd finally wrapped up Martel in the Back Breaker, and that was it. Studd def. Martel by submission at 65:00.

(3) Ultimate Warrior vs. (29) Bob Orton: Orton cheats his way to a major upset and eliminates the #3 seed from the tournament. Orton took control early, hitting Warrior with a flurry of moves. The referee didn’t see it when Orton clocked Warrior with his cast, and knocked him out cold. Orton pulled Warrior up the ropes, hit the Superplex, and that was it. Orton def. Warrior by pinfall at 5:00.

(5) Ted DiBiase vs. (6) Roddy Piper: It’s hard to believe that the #5 and #6 seeds are meeting in the second round of the losers’ bracket, but here they are. Piper got a lot of punches in early, but DiBiase strapped him in the Million Dollar Dream and it was lights out. DiBiase def. Piper by submission at 9:00.

(1) Hulk Hogan vs. (15) Iron Sheik: Hogan hit Sheik with a leg drop early, but Sheik had plenty left in the tank to kick out. Sheik took a lot out of Hogan for a good portion of the match, though Hogan was able to keep pace. Eventually, though, after a Hulk Up, Hogan hit another leg drop and it was over. Hogan def. Sheik by pinfall at 18:00.

(25) Hercules vs. (26) Jimmy Snuka: Hercules had a sizable advantage for much of the match, but Snuka battled back bravely, and was unstoppable at one point. But, the referee got too close as Snuka went for a body slam, and was knocked down. He appeared to be out cold, and so Hercules pulled his chain out of the corner and walloped Snuka. But, he was too slow, as the referee came to and saw what happened. Snuka def. Hercules by disqualification at 20:00.

(19) Jim Duggan vs. (20) Honky Tonk Man: By virtue of hitting his finisher, the Shake, Rattle & Roll, three times, Honky Tonk Man looked well on his way to earning a victory. Tired of the beatdown, Duggan inexplicably used his 2×4 on the Honky Tonk Man was DQ’d. Honky Tonk Man def. Duggan by disqualification at 14:00.

(22) Nikolai Volkoff vs. (28) Bam Bam Bigelow: A slugfest eventually went to the outside of the ring, and the wrestlers’ brawl went to the count of nine. Both attempted to get back into the ring, but only Bigelow could do so before the count reached 10. Bigelow def. Volkoff by countount at 23:00.
