MLB College Gameday #14

Barry Zito led USC to a 9-0 shutout of Arizona State, helping the Trojans to keep a two-game lead in the standings, and greatly diminishing the Sun Devils’ title chances, as ASU is now three back with four to play. UCLA kept within striking distance after a one-run win over Pepperdine.

UCLA 4, Pepperdine 3: The Bruins scored the go-ahead run on a double play in the fourth inning, then added their final run in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Brandon Crawford. Pepperdine got one back in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by Ryan Christenson, but the next batter struck out, leaving the potential tying run on second base.

Arizona 5, Oregon State 3: Down 2-1 heading to the sixth inning, the Wildcats got a leadoff home run from John Moses and a two-RBI single by J.T. Snow to grab a 4-2 lead. The Beavers put runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth but Trevor Hoffman struck out the final hitter.

He retired the final 13 hitters of the game. Jacque Jones continued his torrid hitting, going 4-for-5 with a three-run homer in the eighth inning.

Long Beach State 6, California 4: Terrmel Sledge’s two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning put the Beach ahead for good. In the top of the ninth, Conor Jackson’s RBI double cut the deficit to two and put runners on second and third with one out, but LBSU’s Nick Vincent was able to get the final two outs.

Stanford 4, Cal State Fullerton 1: The Cardinal’s Jim Lonborg was excellent, giving up zero earned runs on five hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. Stanford tied the game at one on Bob Boone’s RBI double in the second, and went ahead on Jody Gerut’s run-scoring double in the third. Jeffrey Hammonds and Ed Sprague hit solo homers in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively.
