MLB College Gameday #16

USC’s first chance at clinching the outright championship was denied, as the Trojans were upset by Pepperdine, ending a 10-game winning streak. UCLA, two back with two to play, remained mathematically alive after a one-run win over Stanford, but Arizona State was eliminated from contention after a loss to Long Beach State. All five games were decided by one or two runs in this round, with the first three contests all ending with a 4-3 score.

California 4, Arizona 3: The Wildcats took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth on Jack Howell’s solo home run. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Kevin Maas doubled, and Darren Lewis followed with a two-run home run to put the Golden Bears in front. Arizona went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.

Pepperdine 4, USC 3: The Waves took a 3-2 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by Chad Kreuter and a two-run single by Andy Stankiewicz. Kreuter, who went 4-for-4, hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to make it 4-2. All three Trojans runs were unearned as a result of Pepperdine errors.

UCLA 4, Stanford 3: The Bruins built a 4-0 lead with the help of solo home runs by Troy Glaus, Eric Karros and Brandon Crawford. In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinal’s Mike Aldrete hit a solo shot and Jed Lowrie added a two-run blast to make it 4-3, but the Bruins then got the final out.

Long Beach State 5, Arizona State 3: The Beach’s Jeff McNeil hit a pair of solo home runs, and Troy Tulowitzki contributed a two-run blast in a three-run sixth inning that put LBSU ahead. The Sun Devils got home runs from Bob Horner in the sixth and Reggie Jackson in the eighth but it wasn’t enough.

Cal State Fullerton 4, Oregon State 2: Khris Davis tripled and scored on a groundout to give the Titans a 2-1 lead in the fifth. They made it 4-1 on Jeremy Giambi’s two-run homer in the eighth. Jacoby Ellsbury drove home a run with a single in the bottom of the ninth and the Beavers had runners on first and third with two out, but Cal State Fullerton got the final out.
