USC’s first chance at clinching the outright championship was denied, as the Trojans were upset by Pepperdine, ending a 10-game winning streak. UCLA, two back with two to play, remained mathematically alive after a one-run win over Stanford, but Arizona State was eliminated from contention after a loss to Long Beach State. All five games were decided by one or two runs in this round, with the first three contests all ending with a 4-3 score.
