USC started 3-2, then won 10 in a row en route to the league title. The Trojans boasted the league’s top hitting team, and their pitchers were second in earned run average. USC led by three with three to play, and although a two-game slide made it come down to the final gameday of the season, the Trojans ended up winning by two games after UCLA lost its finale.
The Bruins led the standings for much of the season, but went 3-4 in the final seven after starting 9-2. Arizona State tied for second with UCLA. The Sun Devils started strong (6-1) and ended well (6-2) but a three-game losing streak in the middle of the season knocked them out of contention.
The last team to win a game, Cal State Fullerton, started 0-5 but went on to go 7-6 the rest of the way. Pepperdine won its first three games, then only won three of the next 15 to join Stanford in the cellar.
