The busiest month of the season with six games turned out to be a fairly successful one, as the Earthquakes posted four wins, one loss and one tie (not far off the actual results of four wins and two ties). While in real life the Earthquakes’ ties came in the final two contests, here, the San Jose ended the month on a three-game winning streak, all by 2-1 scores. Landon Donovan and Manny Lagos both scored four goals in May.

Some times the dice go your way, as they did two games earlier against New England, and sometimes they don’t, as this home rout by the MetroStars indicated. How bad was it? After scoring a pair of second-half goals to go up 3-1, MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard got the ball and sent a booming punt downfield. With help from the wind and an out-of-place San Jose goalkeeper, Howard scored from the length of the field in an ultra-rare game scenario.

Still, Donovan was able to draw and convert his second penalty kick just before halftime to send San Jose into the break with a 2-0 lead. The second half was all Colorado as they pushed forward with the advantage. The Rapids finally broke through in the 79th minute with a goal. A couple of spectacular saves by Joe Cannon in the final minutes preserved the San Jose win.
