Before we get to the results from the first stage of the knockout round, here’s a look at how close the replay results were to the actual 2022 World Cup.
- Four of the eight group winners were the same.
- Eight of the 16 teams that advanced out of the group stage were the same.
- Among that didn’t advance in the replay: two heavyweights — Portugal and Spain — the USA, and semifinalist Morocco.
- Notable countries that did advance in the replay but did not in real life: Germany, Mexico and Belgium.
The Round of 16 was bonkers, although nearly all of the favorites ended up winning. Five of the eight games went to overtime, with two reaching penalty kicks. Three of those overtime games saw the eventual winning team score an equalizer during extra time in regulation. One other game was won with a goal in stoppage time in regulation.
