4/3-6/1989 Seattle at Oakland

The 1989 season replay got underway with Oakland winning two of three home games against Seattle, including a 16-inning marathon in the finale. Mark McGwire hit two homers and drove in seven of the A’s 14 runs in the series. Carney Lansford had a walk-off hit in the extra-innings contest.

April 3: Mark McGwire’s third-inning grand slam put the A’s up 4-1, After the Mariners closed within one run, Oakland padded its lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Stan Javier and an RBI double by Walt Weiss.

April 5: Mark McGwire’s second home run in two games helped the A’s to an early 2-0 lead, but Seattle took a 3-2 lead in the seventh on a Greg Briley solo homer. Oakland put runners on second and third with one out in the seventh but couldn’t score. In the bottom of the ninth, Mike Gallego was thrown out at home trying to score from second on a base hit.

April 6: Oakland had leads of 4-1 and 5-2, but Seattle tied it up in the ninth as Dennis Eckersley blew a save opportunity. The Mariners went up 6-5 in the top of the 13th on Jeffrey Leonard’s RBI single, but the A’s extended the game further on a Luis Polonia homer. Finally, in the bottom of the 16th, Mark McGwire reached on an error and scored on Carney Lansford’s hit.
