5/2-3/1989 Oakland at Toronto

The start of May saw Oakland’s troubles continue, as they went to Toronto and lost both matchups in a two-game series. As usual, the opponent was just a little bit better, getting timely hits while avoiding giving them up. After 28 contests, the A’s have fallen eight games behind pace.

May 2: The Blue Jays opened up a 4-0 lead, the last two on a triple by Tony Fernandez, a sacrifice fly by Fred McGriff and a solo homer from George Bell in the third inning. Oakland closed the gap to 4-3 after an RBI double by Ron Hassey and an RBI single by Stan Javier in the fourth, and an RBI double by Dave Parker in the fifth. But that was it for the A’s, and Toronto tacked on an insurance run in the eighth.

May 3: The A’s got off to a good start, as Tony Phillips led off the first inning with a walk, went to third on a Carney Lansford single, and scored on Dave Henderson’s fielder’s choice. But that would be it for Oakland, which would only put two more runners into scoring position the rest of the way. And while one run would have been enough for Mike Moore in most games thus far, he gave up a three-run homer to Lloyd Moseby in the fifth inning.
