In the final event before the Australian Open, Martina Navratilova became the first two-time winner on the women’s side, while Roger Federer broke through to claim his first title. Navratilova won all three of her matches in straight sets, while Federer only dropped one. The men’s tournament featured a semifinal matchup between two-time winners Ivan Lendl and Jimmy Connors (won by Lendl, who then lost to Federer). On to Melbourne for the first Grand Slam event!
