5/26-28/1989 Oakland at New York

Oakland earned a three-game sweep on the road against the Yankees, just as they did in real life. The offense did the job, scoring a total of 26 runs, including 14 in the finale. It was the Athletics’ first three-game sweep since mid-April. After 49 games, the A’s remain seven wins behind pace.

May 27: A four-run sixth inning, which included a two-RBI double by Carney Lansford, put the A’s up 6-3. The Yankees tied it up in the seventh, however, and the game went to extra innings. In the top of the 11th, Luis Polonia led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a Lansford base hit. Dennis Eckersley got his second straight save and 10th of the season.

May 28: The A’s scored early thanks to a two-run double in the top of the first, but the first four Yankees got hits off of Mike Moore in the bottom of the first, including a two-run homer by Don Mattingly, making it 3-2. Oakland tied it in the fourth, then exploded for a total of 11 runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Five different A’s had hits in both innings, and Luis Polonia and Mike Gallego both drove in three runs in those frames. Terry Steinbach went 5-for-5.
