6/2-4/1989 Cleveland at Oakland

June started just like May ended, with the A’s losing a three-game series. Oakland dropped an extra-innings result in the opener against Cleveland, though Bob Welch responded with a shutout in the second contest (just as he did in real life). After a pair of low-scoring games, the offense picked up in game three, but the Indians had the better of it to win the series. After 55 games, the A’s are back to eight wins behind pace. The season is now just over one-third of the way done.

June 2: Mike Moore didn’t give up a hit until the seventh inning. At that time, the A’s had a 1-0 lead thanks to a Mike Gallego RBI double in the fifth. But in the top of the ninth, the Indians’ Jerry Browne led off with a triple, and a sacrifice fly tied the game. Cleveland scratched across an unearned run in the 12th inning on an RBI double by Brook Jacoby. The A’s didn’t get a hit in the final six innings. There were only seven total hits over the 12 innings.

June 3: Bob Welch has been victimized by poor run support this season, but made sure that wouldn’t come into play as he tossed a four-hit shutout. No Cleveland baserunner made it past second base. The A’s didn’t score many runs for Welch, but two in the third inning were enough thanks to an RBI double by Mike Gallego and a run-scoring single by Dave Henderson.
