More misery for the A’s, as they went 1-2 for the third straight series and fell back to .500 on the season. Their only victory in this matchup against Minnesota saw them blow a ninth-inning lead and have to win in extra innings. After 58 games, Oakland is now nine wins behind pace.

June 5: Dave Parker homered in the first inning to put the A’s up 1-0, but the Twins took a 3-1 lead after three. The A’s got another run on a Lance Blankenship RBI single in the fifth to make it 3-2. But Minnesota scored once in the sixth and four times in the seventh to break it open. Curt Young keeps getting thrown out there despite the fact that he’s now 0-7 with an 8.04 ERA.

June 6: With the help of a Dave Henderson two-run homer, the A’s went up 3-0, and then 4-1 after a solo shot by Dave Parker in the sixth. But the Twins scored twice in the seventh and once in the ninth to tie the game. In the bottom of the 11th, Mark McGwire led off with a walk and eventually scored on Glenn Hubbard’s walk-off single.

June 7: Bob Welch was good — five hits and one run in seven innings — but Frank Viola was better — seven hits, no walks and no runs in nine innings — as the A’s suffered a 1-0 defeat. Despite his 2.59 ERA, Welch is now 5-8 on the season and is begging for some run support. Randy Bush homered in the fourth inning for the game’s only run. Oakland only put runners into scoring position twice.
