In the first clay event of the season — which took place in Stuttgart, Germany, as action moved to Europe ahead of the French Open — Jimmy Connors won for the third time and Martina Hingis pulled off her second victory. Connors ran through the tournament with three straight-set wins, including a victory over rival John McEnroe in the final. Hingis pulled off three straight upsets against three of the game’s top-rated players. She came back from a set down to beat Margaret Court and Chris Evert, then defeated Serena Williams in straight sets.
