The A’s salvaged a four-game split in Baltimore, which turned out to be okay, as the real-life Athletics only won one of the four games there. Mike Moore pitched his third solo shutout of the season and improved to 9-2 on the season with a 1.35 ERA. After 68 games, the A’s are now just six wins behind pace.

June 16 (#1): Things started poorly for the A’s, as they fell behind 3-0 after two (on a Billy Ripken bases-loaded triple), 6-0 after four (after a Brady Anderson two-RBI double) and 8-0 after six (after a Craig Worthington solo homer). Oakland was scoreless until two outs in the top of the ninth, when Mike Gallego had a bases-loaded triple to score three.

June 16 (#2): The second batter of the game, Dave Henderson, launched a home run into the stands for what turned out to be the only run of the contest. Mike Moore was dominant as usual, allowing only three hits (all of them to Steve Finley) and one walk in the shutout. Moore pitched out a bases-loaded jam in the first and avoided anything bad after twice putting a runner on second base with no one out.

June 17: All 11 runs were scored in the second and third innings. Dave Parker’s two-run homer put Oakland up 4-2 in the top of the third. But Baltimore countered with five in the bottom half of the frame, as Bob Melvin and Craig Worthington both had two-run singles. The A’s left the bases loaded in the fifth and two runners on in the sixth.

June 18: Four of the first five A’s had hits, including an RBI double by Mark McGwire and a two-run single by Terry Steinbach as Oakland jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Steinbach and Glenn Hubbard both homered in the third inning to make it 7-0. The Orioles closed the deficit to 7-3 in the fourth inning, but both pitching staffs did the job the rest of the way.
