6/22-25/1989 Toronto at Oakland

The A’s picked up another game in the standings after winning three of four games at home against the Blue Jays. Dave Stewart won his 10th game of the season and pitched a shutout, and Oakland’s final win came via a walkoff hit in the bottom of the ninth by Stan Javier. After 75 games, the A’s are now just four wins behind pace.

June 22: A five-run second inning, which included a three-run homer by Tony Fernandez, sent the A’s to defeat. Nelson Liriano also had an RBI single in that inning, and later had a solo homer in the fourth inning. Oakland’s only run was unearned and came on a Mike Gallego sacrifice fly in the fourth.

June 23: Toronto led 3-2 in the sixth, but an RBI groundout by Stan Javier and Blue Jay error put the A’s ahead 4-3. Ron Hassey slugged a three-run homer in the seventh inning to add some cushion to the lead.

June 24: Dave Stewart fired a one-hitter for his second shutout of the season. He also walked two and one Blue Jay reached base via error, but no one advanced past first base. A pitchers’ duel between Stewart and Dave Stieb finally got broken open in the bottom of the sixth when the A’s put together five consecutive hits for three runs, including a two-RBI double by Dave Henderson and a run-scoring single by Dave Parker.

June 25: A Mark McGwire sacrifice fly put the A’s ahead 1-0 in the first, but Lloyd Moseby hit a two-run homer in the second inning to put the Blue Jays in front. An RBI single by Rickey Henderson tied it in the seventh. Tied at two in the bottom of the ninth, Mike Gallego doubled and Stan Javier followed with a walk-off RBI single.
