The A’s continued their strong push to get back to where they should be at this point in the season. The real-life A’s lost all three in Minnesota, but here, Oakland won twice. Mike Moore and Dave Stewart both won their 11th games of the season, and all three contests were decided by one run. After 78 games, the A’s are now just two wins behind pace.

June 26: Terry Steinbach gave the A’s a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third, and Oakland broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning, with Rickey Henderson providing a two-run single, Dave Henderson knocking a two-run double and Dave Parker following with a run-scoring single. Kent Hrbek broke up the shutout with a solo homer in the seventh. In the bottom of the ninth, Hrbek hit a grand slam against Oakland’s bullpen to cut the deficit to one. But the A’s held on for the win.

June 27: The A’s got a decent start from Matt Young, but couldn’t give him much in the way of run support. The Twins got both of their runs in the sixth inning on a Kirby Puckett RBI single and a Gary Gaetti sacrifice fly. Oakland finally got on the board in the seventh when Terry Steinbach singled and later scored on Mike Gallego’s safety squeeze. That would be it for Oakland’s offense, however.

June 28: Dave Stewart and Frank Viola had a strong pitching duel going for a while. The A’s struck first in the sixth inning when Stan Javier doubled and ended up scoring on a wild pitch. The Twins came back in the bottom half of the inning and tied it as Kirby Puckett and Gary Gaetti doubled. Oakland went back up in the eighth as Glenn Hubbard singled and later scored on Javier’s base hit. A two-out triple by Greg Gagne in the bottom of the ninth made things interesting, but Rick Honeycutt got the final out.
