6/30-7/2/1989 Oakland at Cleveland

The season is now officially at the halfway mark as the 81st game was played in the finale at Cleveland. The A’s couldn’t match their real-life sweep of the Indians, but did win two of three. Dave Parker added two home runs to give him a team-high 16. After 81 games, the A’s are now three wins behind pace.

June 30: A brilliant pitchers’ duel between Bob Welch and Greg Swindell went to extra innings. Both didn’t allow a run in nine innings of work, but both exited with no-decisions. Cleveland won it in the 10th when Cory Snyder led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second, went to third on a deep flyout, and scored on Joel Skinner’s hit. Oakland left 10 runners on base, four of them in scoring position.

July 1: The A’s bounced back with another shutout of their own thanks to seven strong innings by Mike Moore, as he improved to 12-2 on the season. Carney Lansford keyed a three-run first inning with a two-RBI single. Dave Parker hit solo home runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Glenn Hubbard provided a two-run double in the eighth.

July 2: The A’s scored first on an RBI single by Terry Steinbach in the first inning. It stayed that way until the sixth, when Dave Parker made it 2-0 with an RBI double. Ron Hassey plated the third run in the eighth with an RBI single. Oakland took a shutout to the ninth inning but Pete O’Brien led off with a solo homer. The tying run was at the plate with one out but Rick Honeycutt got the save.
