7/3-6/1989 Kansas City at Oakland

Another series, another game picked up in the standings. Oakland took three of four here against Kansas City, better than the split that actually happened. Mike Gallego had three multi-hit games and Mike Moore tossed another shutout. After 85 games, the A’s are now just two wins behind pace.

July 3: The A’s sent all nine batters to the plate in a four-run first inning, with the big hits being a two-run double by Dave Parker, an RBI double by Carney Lansford and an RBI single by Stan Javier. Kansas City cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning, but the A’s scored twice more in the bottom half of the inning with Lansford providing another RBI double.

July 4: The Royals jumped on Matt Young early, and the A’s got only one run off of Bret Saberhagen. Rickey Henderson doubled in the third inning and scored on Tony Phillips’ single.

July 5: The Royals took a pair of early one-run leads, but Rickey Henderson’s two-run homer in the third inning put Oakland ahead for good. They added five more in the fourth inning, as Mike Gallego had a two-run single and Dave Henderson knocked a three-run homer.

July 6: Mike Moore was nearly untouchable again in his fourth shutout, as he gave up just a fourth-inning walk and a fifth-inning single. Mark McGwire got the scoring going with a solo shot in the second inning. Glenn Hubbard had an RBI double and Mike Gallego added a run-scoring single in the second, while Terry Steinbach and Tony Phillips both had RBI singles in the third to make it 5-0. Rickey Henderson had an RBI double and Dave Henderson drove in a run with a single in the eighth inning.
