7/24-26/1989 California at Oakland

As the season moved past the century mark, the A’s took two of three at home against the Angels to pick up a game in the standings. Both Oakland wins came via shutout as Dave Stewart and Mike Moore were terrific. Only Stewart got the win, however, his team-high 14th. After 101 games, Oakland is one win behind pace.

July 25: Dave Stewart was dominant, giving up only three hits in the shutout. Two of them came in the eighth inning as California put its only runner into scoring position with no one out, but Stewart struck out two of the next three hitters to get out of it. The A’s got their runs out of the way early. Dave Henderson had an RBI single in the first and a two-run double in the second, and Glenn Hubbard hit a solo homer in the second inning.

July 26: Mike Moore was nearly untouchable, but didn’t get a decision as the Angels’ Mike Witt helped keep Oakland scoreless for nine innings as well. Moore retired the first 20 hitters, then gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases with two out in the seventh. He struck out the next hitter to get out of it, then pitched two more 1-2-3 innings before being pulled after nine innings. The A’s left runners in scoring position five times in regulation. Finally, in the top of the 10th with one out, Rickey Henderson and Carney Lansford hit back-to-back doubles to earn the walk-off win.
