1989 Oakland Athletics July Recap

The A’s had a good July, going 17-9 in the replay. They went 16-10 in real life, so over the course of the month they picked up one game. After being as many as nine wins behind their 99-victory pace, they started the month three wins behind, finally moved one win ahead of pace on July 15, but fell back to two victories behind by the end of the month. The Athletics are now at 61-44 after 105 games.

The gap widened between the pitching and hitting in July. The pitching (except for Dennis Eckersley and the D-rated pitchers) continues to be excellent, while the hitting (except for Carney Lansford and his .372 average) continues to lag behind. The team batting average dropped from .260 to .257, .009 worse than reality. The team ERA dropped from 2.74 to 2.54, a far cry from the actual ERA of 3.33 at the end of July.

No one’s been more disappointing at the plate than Mark McGwire. Hitting just .195, he’s 50 points worse than reality. Curiously, he does have a team-high 56 runs, which is more than a dozen more than anyone else.

The A’s didn’t have a losing streak of more than two games in July, but didn’t have a winning streak of more than four.
