Pete Sampras hadn’t done much since winning the Australian Open, but finally broke through for his second victory in Bad Homburg, Germany. It helped that Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer were upset in the quarterfinals. Martina Navratilova earned her third victory of the season, though it was her first since the hard-court season in Australia. We finally got a Williams vs. Williams matchup, which Serena won easily in the quarterfinals.
