8/4-7/1989 Oakland at Seattle

A jam-packed four-game series in Seattle had plenty of action and a lot of runs: 25 for the A’s and 27 for the Mariners. The end result was a series split, just like real life. Jose Canseco has gotten things going, collecting eight hits and raising his average to .307 after 19 games. After 112 games, Oakland is still one victory behind pace.

August 4: The highest-scoring game of the season was crazy. Seattle took leads of 4-2 after the first inning and 6-4 after four innings. Oakland responded with six runs in the fifth inning, with Tony Phillips providing a three-run homer, to put the A’s in front 10-6. After seven innings, Seattle tied the game at 11 on Alvin Davis’ fifth and sixth RBIs. Oakland went ahead for good in the eighth on Dave Parker’s bases-loaded, two-out single. The A’s bullpen took care of the rest.

August 5: Mike Moore was close to flawless, giving up only one hit in seven innings. But the hit was a two-run homer by Alvin Davis in the fourth inning. Seattle got a third run in the sixth inning thanks to a pair of errors. Oakland used up all of its offense in the previous game and was shut out by Scott Bankhead.

August 7: Oakland’s offense got going again and the pitching was good enough to salvage the series split. Mike Gallego had a two-run single and Jose Canseco had a bases-loaded double that scored three during a five-run third inning that made it 6-1.
