John McEnroe won the very first tournament of the season back in Australia, but hadn’t won since until this grass-court stop in Birmingham. On the women’s side, Lindsay Davenport made her first very final and came out victorious. She was the only favorite to escape the quarterfinals, then won both her semifinal and the final after losing the first set.
