All-Time Tennis: Wimbledon (Men)

The top seeds and the two highest-ranked players avoided any upsets en route to the Wimbledon final. When it was all said and done, #2 Ivan Lendl beat #1 Rafael Nadal in five sets to claim his first Grand Slam victory. Three of Lendl’s five victories at Wimbledon occurred in five sets, and in the previous two, he had to overcome a 2-0 deficit.

  • First Round: 13 of 16 favorites advanced. #3 Jimmy Connors was the shocker, as he went down in five sets to #30 Gustavo Kuerten. #7 Andre Agassi had to retire due to injury after the first set. #2 Ivan Lendl avoided an upset, surviving after being down 2-0.
  • Round of 16: There was just one notable upset here, with #12 Boris Becker knocking out #5 Roger Federer. Five of the top eight seeds remained heading into the quarterfinals.
  • Quarterfinals: Becker continued his impressive run with a straight-set win over #4 Novak Djokovic. For the second time in three matches, Lendl overcame a 2-0 deficit.
  • Semifinals: The favorites went through to the final, as #1 Rafael Nadal and Lendl both won in four sets.
  • Final: Lendl and Nadal alternated sets, with Lendl winning the first, third and fifth. Four of the five sets were 6-4 or 7-5 results. Lendl matched Nadal with his fifth win of the campaign.

With just one-quarter of the season remaining, it looks like Ivan Lendl and Rafael Nadal are the only two in the running for the overall championship. By virtue of his Wimbledon win, Lendl has a slight 435-425 lead over Nadal. Jimmy Connors was #1 but dropped to #3 with 335 points after a disappointing grass-court run.
