All-Time Tennis: Wimbledon (Women)

After underachieving for much of the season, Serena Williams broke through and made a dominant run to the Wimbledon crown. She lost the first set of her first-round match, then won the next 10 sets, earning straight-set victories in each of her last four matches. After winning the final mini-tournament of the grass-court season, Williams now has three titles in the campaign.

  • First Round: Six of the 16 matches saw the lower seed win. Most notably, in one quarter of the tournament, three of the four matches were upsets, including the ousting of #4 Martina Hingis and #5 Monica Seles, the previous two Grand Slam winners. #10 Iga Swiatek was the other top-10 seed to go down.
  • Round of 16: A few more upsets took place in this round, most notably #2 Martina Navratilova. #1 Steffi Graf trailed her match 6-3, 5-1, but managed an enormous comeback to advance. She was one of only three in the top eight to make it to the quarterfinals.
  • Quarterfinals: Another notable upset, as top-seeded Graf lost to #9 Billie Jean King. She and #3 Serena Williams were the only top-20 seeds in the final four.
  • Semifinals: The favorites held in the semis, with Williams and King advancing in straight sets. The matches were close, as all four sets were decided at 7-5 or 6-4.
  • Final: Williams dominated the first set, winning 6-0. King tightened things up in the second set, but Williams served out the match at 5-4 and earned the win.

Williams’ success on grass moved her up from seventh to second in the points race. Martina Hingis didn’t play well on grass, but maintained the #1 ranking. The points title is up for grabs heading into the final quarter of the season, however, with Hingis at 335, Williams at 325, Steffi Graf at 310, and Martina Navratilova at 285.
