The A’s won another series and matched their real-life effort in taking two of three games at home against the Twins. They needed a sweep but wasted another great performance from Mike Moore in the finale. After 124 games, Oakland remains three wins behind pace.

August 18: Dave Stewart pitched a dominant eight innings to win his 16th game of the season. Only one Twin made it into scoring position. The A’s had at least one hit in every inning but one, and had multiple baserunners in every inning but two. Carney Lansford (1st), Dave Parker (3rd), Mike Gallego (4th) and Jose Canseco (7th) had RBI singles in four different innings to make it 4-0, and Gallego added a three-run homer in the eighth inning.

August 19: The Twins’ 1-0 lead was erased in the sixth inning on Jose Canseco’s two-run homer. But the Oakland bullpen couldn’t hold onto the win for Storm Davis, as Kent Hrbek tied it with a home run in the eighth inning. However, the A’s came right back in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs and getting the go-ahead runs on Rickey Henderson’s two-RBI base hit.

August 20: Despite another near-dominant outing, Mike Moore was another hard-luck loser. He gave up only four hits, but one of them was Wally Backman’s double to lead off the ninth inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Backman scored on Kirby Puckett’s sacrifice fly. The A’s offense was silenced by Allan Anderson, who only allowed one Oakland runner to make second base, and that was in the first inning. Moore fell to 13-9 on the season despite a 1.49 ERA.
