The A’s began a road trip with a single game at Detroit, making up a game that wasn’t played in July. Oakland blew a big lead, but managed to pull off a one-run win with Rickey Henderson leading the way. After 125 games, the A’s are still three victories behind pace.

August 21: Rickey Henderson led off the fourth, sixth and eighth innings with a hit. The A’s scored runs in each of those frames to take a 5-0 lead, with Terry Steinbach driving in three of them and Jose Canseco knocking in the other two. Curt Young was fabulous for seven innings, but he and the bullpen faltered in the bottom of the eighth as the Tigers tied it up. In the top of the ninth, Billy Beane led off with a single and later scored on Henderson’s fourth hit of the game to put Oakland back in front. Dennis Eckersley finished it off for the save.
